My Page for Journal 52 Prompt :Week 37: Newspaper
The first thing I did to start this art journal page, was to gather some old newspapers. I the went through them and ripped out some text. I then adhered the ripped newspaper to my art journal using white pva glue mixed with a little water. I then cut several strips from on sheet of newspaper, the strips were about 2.5 cms wide and about 23 cms in length.
I then used a paper weaving technique and then glued down the weaved newspaper to the page.
Using a separate piece of newspaper, I made a rough sketch of a girls face. I then used black watercolour paint to go over my sketch and painted in where I wanted the shading to be. Once dry I used Creatacolor charcoal pencils to go over the whole picture to add even more shading and contrast. I then used my white sekura gelli roll pen to add highlights to the face, I also used some blue watercolour paint for the eye colour and added some red to the lip's.
I allowed the face to dry and then glued it down to my art journal page. I then cut out of the newspaper some words and images that I wanted to use on my page. I positioned them where I wanted them to be on my page and then glued them down also.
I then decided that I wanted to use the newspaper to make some 3d embellishments. I began by firstly cutting out flower shapes from the newspaper. Next I cut out three butterfly shapes each one slightly smaller than the last.
The flower shapes were just stacked together and then I attached them to my page using a black brad.
I painted some gesso on to the butterfly shapes, and then dried them with my heat gun. I used the heat gun really quite close to the butterfly shapes and for quite a long while. This made the gesso bubble up slightly and gave the butterflies even more texture, which I liked. I then used cotton and thread to sew the three butterfly shapes together. I then glued only half of the butterfly down to my page, as I wanted the butterfly to become a mini book in which I could journal.
I added some alphabet stickers to spell out the 'News Flash'
and then I added a quote beneath the stickers.
The quote reads - 'Strength doesn't come from what you can do, It comes from overcoming the thing's you once thought you couldn't'. I added the date and some more journaling around the page using a white posca paint pen, and the page was complete.
